About T.S.R.
Inadequacy of state armed units, needs
of a specially trained and motivated force The growing demand
of police forces due to extremist problems in the state,
all singularly and collectively, led to the idea of raising
of Tripura State Armed Battalions on Para-military force
lines.
A memorandum issued by the Govt. of Tripura,
briefly described views of the Government about T.S.R..
The gist is given below:-
" The Tripura State Rifles is intended
to provide the state Govt. with a fully self-reliant special
armed force with officers and men of specially trained calibre
with a high degree of fighting fitness, proficiency , discipline,
rigorous training control and combat readiness along with
communication, transport , provisioning and equipment, capable
of meeting any challenge.
Tripura State Rifles Act was drafted on
the lines of B.S.F... and C.R.P.F... Act. This was passed
by Tripura Legislative Assembly on 22 May 1984 and was assented
to by the President of India in July 1984.
The motto of the T.S.R. Unit is "
Veerta Bandhuta". This is based on the philosophy that
a policeman today has to be brave and he must have a feeling
of brotherhood towards his fellow countryman. He must realize
that he is one of them. Therefore, all ranks are known as
"Veer Bandhu" (Brave Friend).
As insignia of three native spears have
been adopted by the T.S.R. unit, of these the first spear
represents the people, the second spear represents the State
and the third spear represents the force and when all the
spears are combined it makes Tripura State Rifles (T.S.R.).
With the above view in mind, the state
Govt. decided to create T.S.R. Battalion. As a result the
1st Bn T.S.R. has been raised and started functioning
with effect from 15th April 1985 at Veer Bandhu
Gram, Gakulnagar.
The 2nd Bn T.S.R. came up on 19th
September 1990 and started functioning at R K Nagar.
Due to the excellent performances
of the 1st Bn T.S.R. in fighting and combating the problems
of increasing insurgency / militancy and maintaining ethnic
amity in the State, the Govt. found the need of having
more Battalions.
