  SAFE DRIVING

PREVENT ACCIDENTS, REACH HOME SAFELY

The increase in number, size, volume, variety and speed of the automobiles has brought in its wake serious traffic hazards. It must be remembered that accidents do not occur, they are caused. Studies on road accidents have shown that human factor is responsible for a majority of them.

India has one of the highest road accidents rates in the world.

Every year more than 3,00,000 road accidents are reported.

Analysis of road accidents show that 80% of the accidents are due to human error i.e. fault of drivers, passengers or pedestrians. A minority of accidents happens due to bad roads and weather.

There is a dire need to educate the road users about the RULES OF THE ROAD so that they observe the rules for their own safety. Some of these are highlighted –

THE DEFENSIVE DRIVING CODE

Care, courtesy and consideration for other road users.

Knowledge of traffic rules and regulation.

Alertness about illegal acts and driving errors of other drivers.

Concern for accident prevention regardless of who is right.

  OVERTAKING

Most of the accidents occur while overtaking.

A Driver either directly hits another vehicle coming from the opposite direction or involve others while overtaking dangerously.

Hence, one should not overtake if he has slightest doubt.

It is necessary to judge the speed of the vehicle you are overtaking and the speed and capability of your vehicle.

Always overtake from the right side of the vehicles you are passing but not at roundabouts and in land carriageways; when the driver of the vehicle in front of you indicates that he is turning right.

Signal your intention of overtaking.

Blow horn or flash headlights to draw attention of the driver being overtaken and when he gives signal CLEAR TO OVERTAKE only then overtake.

Be equally careful when being overtaken.

Do not increase the speed of your own vehicle.

Keep cautious check on the traffic coming from the opposite direction.

Slow down if the overtaking vehicle needs more space and give it to a clear signal to overtake.

CAUTION

If someone foolishly tries to overtake you dangerously in spite of heavy oncoming traffic, it is better to stop your vehicle on the extreme left.
