THE SOUTH TRIPURA DISTRICT

 

 

At a Glance

 

The word ‘South’ signifies the geographical South of the State of Tripura. Its head quarters is located at Udaipur. It has a geographical area of 2624 sq. KM. It has an international border with Bangladesh spanning 320 KMs. As the name suggests the South Tripura District was created on 01-09-1970 with four southern Sub-Divisions of the State namely Udaipur, Belonia, Amarpur and Gandachara. Initially, there were 08 (eight) Police Stations. These were R.K.Pur, Birganj, Jatanbari, P.R.Bari, Baikora, Sabroom and Gandacherra. The South Tripura District was headed by one Superintendent of Police, One Sub-Divisional Police Officer, four Circle Inspector of Police and eight Officers-in-charge of Police Stations. Mr. Laskari Ram, IPS, was the first Superintendent of Police of the district. In the year 1995 Dhalai District was created by merging a portion of the North Tripura District. The District is presently having 05 (five) Police Sub-Divisions, 07 (seven) Police Circles, 12 (twelve) Police Stations and 10 (ten) Police Out posts. There are 38 (thirty eight) Nos. of BOP manned by BSF to protect the border.

 

The District is practically situated between two hill ranges of the State namely Baramura- Debtamura and Atharamura-Kalajhari. In fact, the Southern portion of Baramura hill range runs from North to South after being bifurcated by Gumati River is known as Debtamura hill range. Similarly, the southern portion of Atharmura hill range which also runs from North to South after being bifurcated by Khowai River is called Kalajhari hill range. Apart from Gomati,  the major river of the District are Muhuri and Feni. The District is having an Annual rainfall of 200cm. The  maximum temperature is 35.23* C and minimum temperature is 7.43* C. The District has 04 (four) Revenue Sub-Divisions namely Amarpur, Bagafa. Matabari, Karbook, Killa, Kakraban, Rajnagar, Rupaicharri, Satchan and Hrishyamukh.

About the District

 

Udaipur is situated at a distance of about 52 KM from State Capital Agartala. It was the Capital of Maharajas of Tripura till 1760 AD. During the regime of Maharaja Krishna Kishore the Capital shifted to Old Agartala from Udaipur.

 

Udaipur is famous for Mata Tripureswari Temple. It is situated at Matabari on the bank of Kalyan Sagar lake about 03 KM away from Udaipur town. The Temple is one of the 51 Mahapithasthans of India. According to the PURAN, at this place the RIGHT FOOT" of Mata Sati fell when the body of Mata Sati was cut into piece by SUDARSAN CHAKRA of Lord Bishnu to check Lord Shiva (MAHADEVA) from dancing with the body of Mata Sati. This temple had been constructed five hundred years ago. Five hundred years anniversary of the temple was celebrated in January, 2001. This temple is regularly visited by devotees from Tripura and all over India. Every year premises of Mandir becomes full by the devotees on the occasion of Dwipabali. Other temples at Udaipur are Bhubeneswari temple and Mahadev Bari. The Bhubeneswari temple is situated on the north bank of the river Gumati at Rajnagar. The temple is famous for its attachment with Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore wrote a famous book namely BISARJAN based on some historical facts related with this temple.

 

In addition, there is a famous Dargaah of "Badar Saheb" popularly known as Badar Mokam. It is the honour of Badar Saheb, a famous Muslim ascetic of Chittagong who had come to Udaipur approximately 400 years ago.

 

Udaipur has a large number of lakes which had been excavated by the rulers of Tripura. These lakes are:-

 

DANISAGAR : It was excavated by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya during the period 1511 to 1513 AD.

 

AMARSAGAR : It was excavated by Maharaja Amar Manikya during the period 1577 to 1586. Its area is 118X275 Sq.Mtrs.

 

BIJOYSAGAR : It is also known as Mahadev Dighi. It was excavated by Maharaja Bijoy Manikya. Its dimension is 500 X 200 Sq.Mtrs.

 

JANANNATH DIGHI : It was excavated by Jagannath Deva, younger brother of Maharaja Govinda Manikya. The temple of Lord Jagannath is also situated on the southern bank of this Dighi.

 

KALYAN SAGAR : It is situated on the eastern side of Mata Tripureswari Temple. It is famous for giving shelter to fishes and tortoises. The devotees of Mata Tripureswari used to visit there and worship them.

The other important places of South Tripura District are as follows:-

 

DEBTAMURRA: It is also known as Chhabimurra. It is approximately 35 KM away from Udaipur and falls under Amarpur Sub-Division. Debtamurra means "PEAK OF GOD" The place is famous for images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga and other Goddess. The beautiful images are carved with lot of dexterity on the rocky walls of the hill range which are as steep as 90 degrees and stretch vertically above the Gumti river bank. After the creation of Maharani barrage the area is marooned since it is in the up stream of river Gumti. Besides the hill range is covered with thick jungles and marshy land.

PILAK: The place is situated about 55 KM away from District Head Quarters in Belonia Sub-division. In this place a good number of old stone images were recovered ,according to Rajmala, Balibhim Narayana, the brother-in-law of Ram Manikya Deva became the defacto King when Ratna Manikya, the minor son of Ram Manikya ascended the throne by the oppressive measure taken by Bali Bhim Narayana made him so unpopular that ht had to leave the capital and settled at Pilak Pathar where he had built many temple and installed images. Bali Bhim Narayana lived during the later half of the Seventeenth Century. The images of Buddha, Narasingha, Mahishasurmardini etc. may be dated much earlier. Presently, the officials of Archaeological Survey of India are excavating the area.

TIRTHAMUKH: It is situated about 60 KM away from District Head Quarters at Amarpur Sub-Division. The place is famous for its scenic beauty. The famous Dumber Hydro Project is situated at this location. It is one of the main source of power generation in the State. Prior to the establishment of this Hydel Project there was water fall at this location. The water of river Gumti used to run over a stone having a shape like the head of Cow (GOMUKH) to create beautiful natural water fall. Every year on the day of Poush Sankranti the famous Tirthamukh Mela takes place at this location. A large number of people mostly tribal from all over the State and neighboring State used to visit during the Mela. Lot of devotees take dip in the holy water of river Gumti and also carry out "PINDA DAN" rituals for the peace of souls of their forefathers.

 

Two river namely Raima and Sharma which originated from the Kalajhari hill range merged here to form the famous Gumti river. After the establishment of Dumber Hydel Project a beautiful water reservoir named as Dumber is formed at this location. It is famous for fishery and attracting a large number of migratory birds.

TRISHNA WILD LIFE SANCTUARY

 

It is situated approximately 60 KM away from the District Head Quarters alongside Bangladesh border and in the western part of Belonia Sub-Division. It is famous for Bison and migrating birds. It has a very nice scenic beauty.

DEER PARK AT PATICHARI

 

It is situated by the side of Udaipur-Sabroom National High way. It is famous for spotted Deer (Cittal) and barking Deer(Khatta Harin).

 

The District is very rich in flora and fauna. It has a very thick forests spread all across it. The commonly found trees in South Tripura District are Teak, Sal, Chamol, Gamai, Cashew,Rubber,Agar Garjan etc. Bamboo and chhan grass of various variety grow in plenty in the District. The important wild life are spectacled monkeys, pig, tailed monkeys, bison, elephant, wild squirrel, various types of snakes and variety of birds.

COMMUNICATION

 

 

The District Head Quarters is communicated with PHQ with Hotline Telephone. Except a few PS like Ompi, Taidu, Nutanbazar, PR Bari, Manubazar and Killa all the Police Stations can be contacted over telephone. Sabroom, Manubazar, Ompi and Natunbazar Police Stations also having telephone communication. All the Police Stations and Police Out Posts are having VHF wireless sets. Again except Manubazar PS and some extend of Silachari OP all the police stations can be contacted with District Head Quarters over wireless. Main wireless station is situated Dhawajanagar Police Line. All the Police Stations and Police Out Posts are having separate wireless station. These are maintained by officers and operators posted from SP (Communication) Tripura Office. They are having hand set communication as well.

DUTIES OF DISTRICT POLICE

 

 

The District Police are to deal with every matter related to the citizens to maintain the peace and tranquility and law and order of the District in general and in particular the following duties are entrusted with the District Police.

  • To maintain our sovereignty as described in the preamble of Indian Constitution;
  • To uphold national integrity;
  • To uphold criminal justice system;
  • To maintain law and order and peace;
  • To prevent and detect crime in society;
  • To save human life and properties from the threat of extremists.
  • To protect the rights of the weaker sections of the society including juveniles and women;
  • To enforce the law of the land, to protect the constitutional rights of the citizen free from prejudice;
  • To help people in distress during calamity and disaster;
  • To maintain healthy relations with other agencies including with civil Administration with a view to enforcing the law of the land;
  • To assist the various agencies engaged in development works;
  • To uphold the age old moral values of our Indian society on slot of obscenity and traditional our heritage;
  • To make counter propaganda and psychological fight against the insurgents;
  • To provide security to the VIPs.
