During the long tenure of 13 years of service, Sri Das could earn 34 Major Rewards, a good number of appreciation letters from the Superintendent of Police as a recognition of his hard and sincere works in fighting the insurgency and other crimes. He had, by this time, passed departmental examination and thus qualified for promotion to the rank of Inspector of Police.

Sri Tapan Kumar Das had played a vital role in an encounter which had taken place at Andercharra under PTL PS on 20/09/2000 between a Police party led by the Additional Suptd. Acting on tip off, SI Tapan Kumar Das had left for Gulakpur T.E. area to conduct search along with a contingent of other PS staff under the supervision of SDPO, Kailashahar. Around 1145 hrs, while Sri Das was conducting searches with the help of other police personnel, the extremist gang hiding in road side bushes, fired on the police party. Immediately SI Das and his accompanying staff also opened fire. In the exchange of fire the leader of the extremist gang named Satya Ranjan D/Barma @ Phefu could be shot who died on the spot. Mean while SI Tapan Kumar Das also received  bullet injuries, but the continued fighting  led to the killing of Satya Rn. D/Barma. One improvised revolver, .38 live rounds and a dagger were recovered from the possession of said Satya Rn. D/Barma.
